Featured IPRA Research Tech:  Dee Gamble

Working as the Equipment Archivist Dee has brought a dynamic strength to the IPRA team over the past few months.  As a skeptic when she began her work with the team she has experienced things which have no logical explanation and it has been a pleasure to each of us to watch her reactions in so many situations.  She is logical and seeks to discredit the activity by finding those natural explanations that present at the investigations.  A very spiritual person she is loyal and dedicated to the field of paranormal research and we count ourselves fortunate to share our research with this young lady.

Living in a Haunted House as a Paranormal Investigator

By:  Steven Raebel

This is a story of my most recent Investigation as a paranormal Researcher.   Before we get into that I will give a little background of who I am.  My name is Steven Raebel; I am the Founder of a Western Michigan Paranormal Group Called “Michigan Paranormal Project”.  The group was founded in April 2005 and we have been documenting and recording evidence in haunted locations since.

I’ve had paranormal experiences from the young age of 5.  In my mid 20's I wanted to start documenting and discovering what was really going on.  I have lived in Haunted houses or homes with spirit activity most of my life, but nothing compares to my last experience.

In Aug 2008 I decided to move to a local tourist town called Saugatuck.  Saugatuck is a waterfront community with lots of history and culture.  It is a very laid back, calm, artistic, lake front community and with an amazing history.

In a rush to find a place to rent, because of self imposed limitations, I was desperately looking for an available house in my limited price range.   Within one week I found an old house just outside of town, set back off the road, in a shaded property in the historic district part of town.   The price was a little steep for what I wanted to pay but for a 2 bedroom house, it was perfect for what we were looking for.  So I did a quick walk through of the house and said “yes”.  Now, I believe every thing happens for a reason; unfortunately this was not a smart move on my part.

Within a week of signing the lease we moved into our new house.   At the time I was working two full time jobs, doing investigations and Internet radio.  I was starting a new family in a new location, and everything seemed perfect.

Within approximately 4 days of moving in, my former girlfriend’s two little girls kept saying they would see a man standing in their room at night and in the morning.  We looked into it decided to switch rooms with them shortly after.   At this point we had felt spirits around us in the house but didn’t think much of it. We thought it was spirit guides or loved ones who passed away, coming to give comfort and love.  Within two months of living in the house we had experienced Full body apparitions, hearing voices, and had taken strange pictures in the house.  It didn’t take long for everyone to start acting out of character.  Emotional outbursts, lethargy, headaches, depression, arguments, sleeplessness and strange actions all began to occur to those we spoke to and communicated with inside the house.   Our lives began to unravel and so did our relationship.

After Six months my former girlfriend and her two children who lived with me, moved out. At that time I began doing a paranormal investigation on my own house. Once I began communicating with the spirits in the house, they started manifesting and communicating to everyone but me.  Family members, other paranormal investigators even groups were able to get the spirits to communicate.

At the time I worked with psychics all over the United States so I started doing work with them to try and understand what was going on in my house.  We used a cell phone and web cam so they could talk and see what was going on in the house.   The consistency with what the psychics, friends, family, other Paranormal Investigators, and I had experienced was unbelievable.   Most of the communications were from 3 different spirits.  There seemed to be something else that was hiding or didn’t want to be communicated with. When we conducted communication sessions with the earthbound spirits, there would be times they would be very scared of something in the house.

Once I started bringing people into the house mostly who were sensitive to the other side I started to understand what was going on.   Seemed most people who were in contact with the house started to have drastic grounding issues.  They were inspired but very out of control lifestyles.  That is when I met my spiritual life coach.  Bernadette Dickinson is a Clairvoyant Life coach, author and professional Psychic.  Most of the work she does is based on spiritual principles and spiritual understanding.  I started to tell her about some of the experiences I was having and that is when she started to teach me how to pray and protect myself when dealing with the paranormal.   This is when I started to understand not all sprits were love and light.

I started to learn Psalms and read the Bible when the activity in the house started to get uncomfortable.  Not only were there full body apparitions manifesting,  but screaming and yelling coming from rooms nobody was in.  Objects flying off the bookshelf’s, phone chargers flying out of the walls, beds shaking violently, and people who would visit being overcome or possessed by disembodied spirits. I understand it all sounds crazy but these things would happen on a daily basis with eyewitness within the paranormal, spiritual people, models working for me, psychics, family members, friends, and skeptics.  Aside from me, they attacked the models and skeptics the hardest.

For the last six months I have lived in this house studying and doing communication work with the spirits in the house, isolated except for doing radio shows.  I can no longer do that while in the house because of electronic interference from the spirits.   I have lived isolated studying on what the spirits are why they are here and understanding how they communicate to each other and us.

This has been a very tough battle and high price for a spiritual education. My heart and prayers go out to anyone who has to go threw this in life.  My current lease is coming to an end and I am so excited to be moving on.

The one thing I have learned from this experience is that there are a lot of aspects of activity we can’t see or predict. It is very important to be educated on all possibilities. As a paranormal researcher I will include all of my experience from this house and apply it to future investigation. I have learned how important it is to combine both scientific and spiritual aspects when doing my research.  I encourage anyone wanting to get into paranormal to broaden their scope to include spiritual principles of protection.

From the Author

My name is Steven Raebel I am a 31 yr old Currently Living in West Michigan.  I am the Founder of Michigan Paranormal Project a Small independent Paranormal Investigating Group.  I have been Interested in Paranormal Activity Since a very early age.  Most of my Life I have had Paranormal Experiences where ever I have been placed.  I founded MPP in 2005 To Document Spirit Activity for mostly personal reasons and to help share information with others that have similar experiences.   Since I have started we have meet some of the most amazing people and crossed paths with hundreds of people that share the same passions.

We have done Investigations with Public locations, Graveyards, Private residences, Private Businesses, House Cleansing, Live Investigations broadcast on Radio, and Council with many others in the same field.  Going into the Paranormal I was very Excited to discover the truth but was also very skeptical that there were others like me.  Now I am a supporter of the work A lot of others are doing and why they are doing it.  I have learned a lot in the few years that we have been looking into discovering the truth about paranormal and we have a lot more to learn.

Current projects that we are excited about is helping others learn and protect them selves concerning Paranormal Activity.  We have a Radio show on Blog talk Radio Called Michigan Paranormal Underground Radio.  This has helped us connect with people All over the world.  Hearing different experiences and story's has really helped us in learning from others prospectives world wide.  Interviewing People who are active in the paranormal as far as studying and others who have to live or deal with paranormal activity on a daily basis in homes or businesses they live and own is something that has really helped us learn and want to help educate people on what we have learned along the way.  The Radio show is a great way for us to keep everyone up to date on current events and help more people share with some of the experiences that cross our path on a weekly basis.  I want to thank everyone for all the support and help along the way.  We are to do what we have passion for and learn so that we can help others.  We have crossed paths with all types of backgrounds and personality types.

We very much appreciate all the people who have helped us along the way and continue to come into our paths as we are on this journey.   We very much look forward to hearing from everyone and your feedback is something we learn from Greatly.

God Bless

The Young Paranormalists

(The new Younger groups and what they are doing wrong)

By: Kristy Hinkle

The rapid growth of the paranormal field has not only opened up doors for Paranormal Researchers to meet each other, but also it has grabbed the attention of the younger members of society. This is a good thing, but it is also a bad thing. Not only do we now have younger members of society looking to carry on once the elders of the community have stepped down but we also have the problem with these younger ones going in to a case unprepared. Things they have never seen before or dealt with before may be lurking in every other corner of an Extreme Haunting.

There are dangers in this field that you will not see on Sci-Fi’s Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters International, or A&E’s Paranormal State, or any of the other television shows out there. You need to be properly trained in how to handle such cases. You can not just go into a person’s house gather evidence then never speak to them again. These homeowners or Business owners come to us for help! They would not contact us if they did not need help. Going into a home or business though also carries a lot of other responsibilities that you may not be ready for. There are also psychological problems that you may have to deal with. Such as parents who want their fifteen minutes of fame; they want their children to claim to see spirits in the home, they tell lies and in some cases they want their home to be haunted so badly that they will go to extremes to prove that it is.

Are you ready or qualified to go into a home and tell a family that there is no spirits in the home, but instead there is a very serious psychological problem stemming from one person or another in side the home?

What makes one person more qualified than another to make this sort of diagnosis? Well, a degree for example; A degree in psychology or Parapsychology. There are teams out there who instead of having one on their team, they have chosen to incorporate one as a close friend to assist in private residence cases, which is fine to.

Are you or your team ready for the real dangers out there?

This is a question you must ask yourself. Say your team has been around for a year or more and has only ever done ‘pay hunts’ at public places, leaving you with minimal evidence and true experience. One day you get a call from a private homeowner who is terrified, this person or their children are being hurt physically in their home. After gathering your information and taking a report. You set up a date, for an emergency case you and your team decide the sooner the better right? This house sounds seriously active and promising. Maybe you will gather enough evidence to finally get ‘noticed’ in the field.

So the big day comes along and you and your team show up promptly on time to interview the client and get all of your expensive and impressive collection of equipment set up. During the investigation something does happen, an investigator is thrown down the stairs in the home. Badly hurt and you must call a squad; that investigator down, you continue on like ‘professionals’ hell bent on doing the job and getting the evidence. At the end of the night you pack up your stuff and call it a night. All the evidence you’ve gathered and an investigator still in the hospital.

Once the data has all been reviewed, you do what they do on television. You present this evidence to the homeowner. Offering them absolutely no help or advice of any kind you and your team move on to the next great feat. Presenting all of your evidence on your website and your MySpace accounts.  Declaring it all ‘Copyright (your team name)’

In the end you have one investigator who now has a medical bill and a homeowner with no answers. Just a disc of evidence to show to other teams who will come in and do the same thing. Still leaving the homeowner with no real answers, but a lot more questions. What about mailing the evidence on a disc to the client? That sound like you helped anyone?

Does this sound like your team? If this hit a cord with you then chances are it is your team.

I do not have a problem with new teams, younger teams at all. They are the future of Paranormal Research, but what I do have a problem with is these fly by nights who are trying to be the next Ghost Hunters or Ghost Hunters International Stars. Or the next Paranormal Celebrity chasing ghosts in the next big Paranormal Documentary or Movie.

Just a little insight here. Those people you see featured in these documentaries, television shows, or movies have had years of experience, training and investigating under their belts. Some do not, I’ll admit. Some people are just on there to share their experiences, but one five minute spot on an interview is not making them a Paranormal Star.

Here’s my advice.

Get a lot of training, read lots of books, do a lot of research. Don’t go out and spend thousands of dollars on equipment to attempt to catch the best evidence this is not a contest. If you must form your own group with out ever joining another team because you can not stand to be told what to do, then ask for help from other teams. Learn from each other! Do not get your training by watching 1 hour shows on Sci-fi or A&E or any other channel. Remember they have editors who cut out a lot of the less than interesting parts. You only see on those shows what they want you to see. They are only out for ratings, not for helping or expanding the paranormal field. Nor are these channels trying to educate you on how to do what they do…

*These comments are directed solely at the television channels themselves and not those appearing in the shows.*

Time

By: David Roundtree

photo Let’s explore time travel. In the realm of advanced civilizations, UFO technology and inter-dimensional travel, time travel would be a controllable function as well as space. While wormholes will offer the portal to travel between dimensions and universes, it will also open the time portal, between past, and future. While we are all familiar with the concept of the time machine, from H.G. Wells to current sci-fi writers, few people know that some researchers have actually built time machines. Jenny Randle’s book “Breaking the Time Barrier: the Race to Build the First Time Machine”, documents some of these success stories. The current common thread is the construction of a Tipler Cylinder, conceived by Tulane University professor Frank Tipler in 1974, which is a rotating dense matter cylinder out in space, spinning at thousands of RPS. The potential time traveler would journey up to the device in a space craft, orbit as close as safely possible a few times, and head home. The distance you travel in the past is based on the number of revolutions the ship makes around the cylinder.

This works because there is a warped region of space surrounding the spinning cylinder that acts as a time suppressant. Anything outside of the warped region would mover further and further into the past.

One hitch in this device was Tipler required that the cylinder be infinitely long. New research indicates this is not necessarily so. Some in fact believe that if you orbited a spinning black hole or neuron star, you could achieve the same effect. Still another concept would be to utilize infinitely long and dense cosmic strings that could somehow be made to spin fast enough to get a closed time loop to form around it. Better still, according to Princeton University theorist Richard Gott, creating a time loop could be as simple as finding two strings moving past each other at high speed. The angles would be critical for success, being exactly parallel to each other as they passed, creating the closed loop. Of course, as with many theories there is a catch. So far there is no proof these cosmic strings even exist.

Randle highlights a physicist who has deep personal reasons for building a time Machine. Ron Mallett lost his father to death when he was only ten years old. His quest is to see his father again. Ron is working on a machine that uses lasers to warp space by orbiting them and spinning them at high speed, creating a time distortion. He believes this distortion will actually be a spatial dimension, a time within its own landscape that a person could navigate in. Ron began construction in 2002. Good luck Ron!

Storms and Mysteries

Aside for our infantile efforts to enter the time displacement race, alien technologies are most likely way ahead of us in manipulating the energy of the universe. In her book Time Storms, Randle writes that time warps may already exist naturally, based on documented human experiences of lost time, time leaps, altered perception of time, and rifts in the fabric of space. It is quite possible that places such as the Bermuda Triangle, the Great lakes Triangle, the twelve vile vortices, or other questionable spots may be examples of time disturbances. Let me relate an example of this that happened to Bruce Gernon:

One of the most well-known encounters in the Bermuda Triangle happened to Bruce Gernon Jr. on December 4, 1970. Bruce and his father had built up a successful real estate brokerage in southern Florida. By his early 20s, Bruce already had about 600 hours flying time and was very familiar with Florida and the Bahamas. However, none of this prepared him for an encounter which over 30 years later still puzzles him.

For those of you who are long-standing buffs of the Triangle’s evolving mythos, you have already heard versions of Bruce’s account, the first in 1977 in Charles Berlitz’s sequel Without A Trace, and from Arthur C. Clarke’s Mysterious Universe, Discovery Channel and on a recent TLC documentary on the Bermuda Triangle, for which this webmaster was the Consultant.

Bruce is far from a “salesman” or publicity seeker. He strikes one as contemplative and non aggressive. The only reason his account became public was from his friendship with the late J. Manson Valentine, who often cataloged the unexplained in the Bermuda Triangle and was the source for Charles Berlitz’s 2 books on the subject.

Gernon was so amazed at his encounter that he wrote down details shortly after it happened and even began to do some of his own investigating. Here he shares some of what he encountered and what he has discovered over the last 30 years of flying the Triangle. His keen memory for detail has aided in the production of pictures and maps, detailing what he experienced.

In his own words:

“My dad and I had been flying our own plane in the Bahamas since 1967, and had made at least a dozen flights to and from Andros Island. Everything seemed normal on that fateful day in December, just after 3 p.m., when my dad and I and Chuck Lafeyette, a business associate, lifted off the runway at Andros town Airport in a brand new Beechcraft Bonanza A36.
It was shortly after takeoff when I noticed an elliptical cloud directly in front of us about a mile away, hovering only about 500 feet above the ocean. It was a typical lenticular cloud, but I had never seen one that low.”

“Miami Flight Service reported over the VHF radio that the weather was good, so we continued. But the lenticular cloud quickly changed into a huge cumulus cloud. We were climbing at 1,000 feet per minute, and the cloud seemed to be building up at the same rate. Unexpectedly, it caught up and engulfed the Bonanza. After 10 minutes of climbing in and out of this cloud, the airplane finally broke free at 11,500 feet and the sky was clear.“

“I leveled the Bonanza off and accelerated to its maximum safe cruising speed of 195 miles per hour. When I looked back at the cloud, I was astonished. It now looked like an immense squall, abnormally shaped in the form of a giant semicircle extending around us. Visibility was about ten miles and the cloud continued beyond my perception, so it must have been more than 20 miles long. After a few minutes, I lost sight of it.”

“Soon we noticed another cloud building directly in front of us, near the Bimini Islands. It looked a great deal like the cloud that we had just left, except that its top was at least 60,000 feet high. When we came with a few miles of it, we saw that it appeared to emanate directly from the surface of the Earth.

Upon entering the cloud we witnessed an uncanny spectacle. It became dark and black, without rain, and visibility was about four or five miles. There were no lightning bolts, only extraordinarily bright white flashes that would illuminate the entire surrounding area. The deeper we penetrated, the more intense the flashes became, and so we made a 135-degree turn to the left and headed due south out of the cloud. “

“We had been flying for 27 minutes. We thought we might be able to fly around the cloud, but after six or seven miles we saw that it continued in a near-perfect curve to the east. After two more minutes it became apparent that the cloud near Andros and the cloud near Bimini were actually opposite sides of the same ring-shaped body! The cloud must have formed just off of Andros Island and then rapidly spread outward into the shape of a doughnut with a diameter of 30 miles. This seemed impossible, but there was no other explanation. We were trapped inside a billowing prison, with no way under or over it.”

“Thirteen miles later, I noticed a large U-shaped opening on the west side of the doughnut cloud. I had no choice but to turn and try to exit through the opening. As we approached, we watched the top ends of the U-gap join, forming a hole. The break in the cloud now formed a perfect horizontal tunnel, one mile wide and more than 10 miles long. We could see the clear blue sky on the other side.”

“We also saw that the tunnel was rapidly shrinking. I increased the engine RPM, bringing our speed to the caution area of 230 miles per hour. When we entered the tunnel, its diameter had narrowed to only 200 feet.”

“I was amazed at what the shaft now looked like. It appeared to be only a mile long instead of ten-plus as I had originally estimated. Light from the afternoon sun shone through the exit hole and made the silky white walls glow. The walls were perfectly round and slowly constricting. All around the edges were small puffs of clouds of a contrasting gray, swirling counterclockwise around the airplane.”

“We were in the tunnel for only 20 seconds before we emerged from the other end. For about five seconds I had the strange feeling of weightlessness and an increased forward momentum. When I looked back, I gasped to see the tunnel walls collapse and form a slit that slowly rotated clockwise.

All of our electronic and magnetic navigational instruments were malfunctioning. The compass was slowly spinning even as the airplane flew straight. I contacted Miami and told them we were about 45 miles southeast of Bimini, heading east at 10,500 feet. The radar controller replied that he was unable to identify us anywhere in that area.”

“Something bizarre had happened. Instead of the blue sky we expected, everything was a dull, grayish white haze. Visibility seemed like more than two miles, yet we could not see the ocean, the horizon, or the sky. The air was very stable and there was no lightning or rain. I like to refer to this as an “electronic fog;” because it seemed to be what was interfering with our instruments. I had to use my imagination to feel our way west.”

“We were in the electronic fog for three minutes when the controller radioed that he had identified an airplane directly over Miami Beach, flying due west. I looked at my watch and saw that we had been flying for less than 34 minutes. We could not yet have reached Miami Beach— we should have been approaching the Bimini Islands. I told the controller that he must have identified another airplane and that we were approximately 90 miles southwest of Miami and still looking for Bimini.”

“Suddenly the fog started breaking apart, in a weird sort of electronic fashion. Long horizontal lines appeared in the fog on either side of us. The lines widened into slits about four or five miles long. We saw blue sky through them. The slits continued expanding and joined together. Within eight seconds, all the slits had joined, and the gray fog had disappeared. All I could see was brilliant blue sky as my pupils adjusted to the abrupt increase in brightness. Then, I saw the barrier island of Miami Beach directly below.”

“After we landed at Palm Beach I realized that the flight had taken a little less than 47 minutes. I thought something must have been wrong with the airplane's timer, yet all three of our watches showed that it was 3:48 P.M.

I had never made it from Andros to Palm Beach in less than 75 minutes, even on a direct route. Our course on this flight was quite indirect and probably covered close to 250 miles. How could the airplane travel 250 miles in 47 minutes? We taxied to customs, ending the fortuitous flight. We didn't talk about it for a long time.”

“I could not logically understand what had happened during that flight, although I felt it was significant and reviewed it in my mind several times a day. In 1972 I heard about the so-called Bermuda Triangle and disappearances of boats and airplanes because of a possible time warp. It was then that I realized that time itself was the key.”

“It should have taken about four minutes to travel through the tunnel, since it appeared to be between 10 and 15 miles long. Instead, this is precisely how long it took for us to leave the storm and reach clear skies. The remarkable thing is that we did not come out of the storm 90 miles away from Miami as we should have - We had traveled through 100 miles of space and 30 minutes of time in a little more than three minutes.”

Question: Did you notice any blue-green glowing phosphoresce before, during or after your experience?

Answer:  “I didn't notice any colors other than shades of gray. It was the color of fog that is one of the reasons I call it Electronic Fog. I have seen what is known as the "Green Flash" in the Florida Keys 3 times. It is a florescent lime color and it has lasted from about 10 seconds and up to one minute. “

Question: Did you notice any turbulence associated with your experience?

Answer: “I did notice some turbulence related to the Fog. When my airplane reached the end of the Tunnel and made its exit from the Storm, I felt the sensation of zero gravity. I also felt as if we were being given a boost in forward momentum. At the same time and length of this feeling, contrails formed on the edge of the wingtips for about 10 seconds.

It was at this point the Electronic Fog attached itself to the airplane. I believe the airplane was flying in clear weather but it appeared to be IMC because the Fog was attached to the airplane. In other words I wasn't flying through the fog, I was flying with the fog. It takes a different perspective of the mind for a pilot to realize this, and this could be the reason for a pilot to become immediately spatially disoriented.”

Question: Could you describe the “Green Flash?

Answer:  “Like the electronic fog, the Green Flash is very uncommon. It is well known in Key West—- probably because they celebrate the sunset every day. It probably only happens a few times a year. I lived in the keys 15 years and only saw it three times. The second and third times that is saw it, I knew it was coming so I showed it to my family and some friends. . . .When the Green Flash appears, always as the sun is setting below the horizon, the sun instantly turns from orange to green.”

Question: As an in situ observer, and from your experience flying in the Bermuda Triangle, what other phenomena have you observed?

Answer: “I have seen many UFO's, but none in the last twenty years. The first one was in 1957 in Florida and was spectacular. I witnessed it with eight other family members. It was spiracle in shape and performed many maneuvers. We watched it for over 30 minutes and it came within one mile from us. It was about 100 feet in diameter and white in color. I believe it was a form of Ball lightning.”

“I have seen UFO's that may have been associated with the storm I flew through. The first one was only a month after I flew through the storm. We were flying at night about 9:30 PM in February and the weather was CAVU. We were over Miami at 10,000 and headed due east toward Bimini. When we got a few miles offshore we noticed an amber light far to the east of us. Suddenly it came toward us at an incredible speed. It was on a collision course with us and within seconds it was right in front of us. It was bright amber and shaped like a saucer with a diameter of about 300 feet. It was massive and I felt that its mass was of a solid nature and not just a form of light. I banked to the left to avoid a certain collision— when I looked back to see where is was, it had vanished. It may have been an illusion, although we both saw the exact same thing. It is interesting to note that the UFO was on the same flight path that I had traveled when I went through the time tunnel and encountered the electronic fog.”

“I noticed the full Moon came up over the horizon about an hour later. I thought there must be a correlation. About a year later I had a feeling I might see a UFO on a flight back from the Carolinas. Sure enough a UFO appeared and we even photographed it. It was the same shape and size as the one I almost collided with and the full Moon came up about one hour after we witnessed it.“

“Another year later I had a feeling I might see some UFO's offshore again so we drove to the beach in Delray at night an hour before the full Moon would rise. We saw five UFO'S in formation traveling an incredible speed from north to south, all heading toward Bimini. They were all the same shape and color as the ones I had seen previously.”

“I thought I had discovered a correlation with UFO's and the Moon, but I have never seen this happen again. It could be some form of reflection that creates an illusion, or it could be a form of lightning yet to be discovered— I like to call them “Lightning Birds” because similar to ball lightning they seem to have a mind of their own and they have aeronautical abilities that only a bird could possess.”

Karma
By: Tracy Lewis

Is the concept of "action" or "deed”, understood as that which causes the entire cycle of cause and effect, action and reaction that governs all life.  Any kind of intentional action whether mental, verbal, or physical, is regarded as Karma.

The law of Karma states-All living creatures are responsible for their karma — their actions and the effects of their actions.

Karma is not fate, for humans act with free will creating their own destiny, nor predestination imposed upon us by some mysterious unknown power to which we must helplessly submit ourselves. It is one’s own doing reacting on oneself, and so one has the possibility to divert the course of one’s Karma to some extent. How far one diverts it depends on oneself. If we sow goodness, we will reap goodness; if we sow evil, we will reap evil. Karma refers to the totality of our actions and their concomitant reactions in this and previous lives, all of which determines our future. The conquest of karma lies in intelligent action and dispassionate response.

Karma is not punishment or retribution but simply an extended expression or consequence of natural acts.

While we are born to a state created by ourselves, yet by our own self-directed efforts there is every possibility for us to create new, favorable environments even here and now. Not only individually, but also, collectively, we are at liberty to create fresh Karma that leads either towards our progress or downfall in this very life.

He who believes in Karma does not condemn even the most corrupt, for they; too, have their chance to reform themselves at any moment. Though bound to suffer in woeful states, they have hope of attaining eternal Peace. By their own doings they have created their own Hells, and by their own doings they can create their own Heavens, too.

The shortest explanation of karma that I know is: 'you get what you give'. In other words; whatever you do intentionally to others, a similar thing will happen to yourself in the future.

WHY BELIEVE IN KARMA?
Simply said, if we chose to ignore the workings of karma, we tend to create many problems for ourselves. For example, if we like to have something expensive, but we cannot afford it, it becomes very tempting to steal. If we are smart and attentive enough, we may never be caught stealing. However, by stealing, we create problematic situations for ourselves in the future, like poverty, or being the victim of robbers. Therefore, if we chose to ignore karma, the results of our actions will still haunt us.

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

Reasons to believe in karma?  It represents ultimate justice as everyone will harvest the results of their actions, and even if karma would not exist, as long as I try to avoid negative actions, the world would be a better place to live in for everyone anyway.

HOW KARMA WORKS
A very good and succinct explanation by Geshe Tashi Tsering in his book The Buddha's Medicine for the Mind: Cultivating Wisdom and Compassion: "Intention is the most important of all mental events because it gives direction to the mind, determining whether we engage with virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral objects. Just as iron is powerlessly drawn to a magnet, our minds are powerlessly drawn to the object of our intentions.

An intention is a mental action; it may be expressed through either physical or verbal actions. Thus, action, or karma, is of two types: the action of intention and the intended action. The action of intention is the thought or impulse to engage in a physical or verbal act. The intended action is the physical or verbal expression of our intention. Karma actually refers to the action of intention but in general usage it includes the intended action and the seeds that are left in the mind as a result.

How do we accumulate karmic seeds? Every physical and verbal action is preceded by mental activity. Goodwill motivates a kind gesture; ill will motivates nasty words. Ill will is the intention to cause mental, emotional or physical harm. Thus, before and during a bad action, ill will is present in our mind. The presence of ill will before and during this act has an impact and influence on the mind due to which a certain potential is left behind. This potential is a karmic seed, a seed planted in our mind by physical, verbal or mental action. The strength or depth of this seed is determined by a number of factors; including how strong our intention is, whether we clearly understand what we are doing, whether we act on our intention and whether the physical and verbal action is completed.

Seeds will remain in the mind until they ripen or are destroyed. Seeds left by negative mental events and actions can be destroyed by the four opponent or antidotal powers. The most important of these four powers are regret for the negative act and a firm resolve not to act that way again in the future. Seeds left by positive mental events and actions can be destroyed by anger.

Even if we do not act on a negative intention, a karmic seed of diminished potency is still left in the mind. This incomplete seed is easier to remove. If it is not destroyed, a negative seed will eventually produce an unpleasant and negative effect while a positive seed will produce a pleasant and positive effect. Karmic seeds do not go to waste even after one hundred eons. They will come to fruition when the time comes and the conditions assemble.”

THE FOUR LAWS OF KARMA

  1. Results are similar to the cause. Simply said, when I cause other people harm, I will harvest suffering myself. It is important to note here, that "positive" actions are defined as actions that have happiness as a result; "negative" actions are defined as actions that lead to suffering as a result.
  2. No results without a cause. As is obvious within science, things do not just appear out of nothing.
  3. Once an action is done, the result is never lost. Similarly as above, things do not just disappear into nothing.
  4. Karma expands. Once we have an imprint of an action in our mind, it tends to be habit-forming. As is often said in wars for example, killing the first enemy is tough, but after a handful, one quickly loses count and it becomes "normal". Also psychology often stresses a similar point when e.g. explaining actions of adults from their childhood experiences.

THE FOUR POWERS OF PURIFICATION
The purification practices found within Buddhism are not unlike the practices applied in many other religions. The most essential mental factor that one requires is sincerity or honesty with oneself. When one wants to purify past negative karma, one has to do some action with the correct motivation.

This is summarized in the following Four Powers of Purification:

  1. Power of the Object: One should practice thinking of all sentient beings one may have hurt. Traditionally, one remembers all sentient beings and the Three Jewels of Refuge (Buddha, Dharma and Sangha), by generating compassion for all sentient beings and taking refuge.
  2. Power of Regret: This should not be senseless guilt or self-recrimination, which are said to be useless emotional torture. What is intended here is to examine oneself and one's actions and to recognize that negative actions done in the past were very unwise.
  3. Power of Promise: As a logical consequence of the above, one should promise not to repeat these negative actions. It is good if one can promise to avoid a negative behavior for a specific time, or at least promise that one will put effort in avoiding repetition. Not being honest at this stage makes the practice useless or even harmful to oneself.
  4. Power of Practice: Basically any positive action with a good motivation can be used as practice. Traditionally in Buddhism, one can practice e.g. making prostrations (throwing oneself to the floor - as a means to destroy pride), making offerings (to counteract greed), reading Buddhist texts (to counteract ignorance and negative thoughts), reciting mantras etc.

It is often explained that one needs to clear a field by purifying it from rocks and weeds, then planting seeds by study and meditation, giving water and fertilizer by doing positive actions, and automatically new harvest will grow.

"I am the owner of my karma.
I inherit my karma.
I am born of my karma.
I am related to my karma.
I live supported by my karma.
Whatever karma I create, whether good or evil, that I shall inherit."

Notes from the front Desk:
June in Iowa saw us all scrambling to stay afloat.  The flooding came in a deluge and several of us found ourselves out of our homes and riding out the storms.  June’s newsletter did not make it to publication but this month’s crawled in just in the nick of time.

Some events to keep in mind are the MidSouth Conference in Louisville, Kentucky in mid September.  The WISP girls will have a booth there and we would like you all to join us.  Steven A. LaChance will be signing books during our time spent there as well as other guests that will be stopping by to entertain us.  Kristy Hinkle will also be doing a book signing of her creation “A Haunting Existence”.

The WISP site is being revamped and updated, please check in often to watch for the changes and to find the latest updates on the schedule of events taking place in May of next year.
